If you would like to re-enter Germany after having had a residence permit (not visa!) you can apply for a visa for re-entry

General Information

The official website of the Federal Government of Germany Make it in Germany contains a lot of helpful information about working and living in Germany.

Re-entry into Germany visa can be applied for in the following situations:

  • You lost your passport which contains a German residence permit. In this case you first have to get a new passport.
  • Your German electronic residence permit (separate plastic ID card) is lost
  • Your German residence permit expired.

Please note: If you still have your valid German residence permit either as a separate plastic ID or in an expired passport, you do not need a visa. You can enter Germany with your German residence permit (in the expired passport or as a separate plastic ID) in combination with a valid/new passport.
