Driver's licence

Short-term stay in Germany (less than 185 days)

When staying in Germany temporarily (less than 185, e.g. as a tourist), you are permitted to drive a motor vehicle if you have a valid Tanzanian driver's license or international driver’s licence together with an official translation into German.
Translations of Tanzanian driver's licenses can, for example, be obtained at the ADAC, a German automobile club. Please make sure to submit your original (!) Tanzanian driver's license to an ADAC office in Germany or send it by registered mail to the ADAC at the following address:

ADAC Hessen-Thüringen
Abteilung Führerschein-Übersetzung
Grabenstraße 5
65183 Wiesbaden, Germany
Ph: +49 (0)611 377 073

Long-term stay in Germany (more than 185 days)

If you reside in Germany continuously for a period of 185 days or more (more than six months), you will be deemed to have established a “regular place of residence” there. For more information on converting your Tanzanian driver’s license to a German one, please contact the competent driver licensing agency (Führerscheinstelle) of your place of residence in Germany. The rules and regulations vary depending oft he residence and law of the federal state.

Regulation on minimum age

Additionally the fact is pointed out that from 1 July 2011 a regulation of minimum age for holders of foreign driver’s licenses has come into force according to which the license is not to be used if the holder has not reached a minimum of 18 years of age ( § 10 Abs. 1 Satz 1 Nummer 3 Fahrerlaubnis-Verordnung (FeV)).

In Case of Loss of your German Driver’s License

You lost your German driver's license in Tanzania? You should first make a police report about the loss or theft at the closes police station. The Tanzanian police offers this service also online: https://lormis.tpf.go.tz/

German driver's licenses are only issued by local authorities in Germany. Please contact your license department at your place of (last) residence. German Missions abroad cannot issue driver's licenses or any other kind of replacement.

Detailed information on how to obtain a replacement can be ascertained at your local license department.

Conversion of old German Driver’s Licenses

All German driver’s licenses issued before 19.01.2013 have to be converted within a certain deadline. The deadlines are staggered and depend on the issuing date of the driver’s license as well as on the date of birth of the license holder.

The earliest end of the deadline is 19.01.2022 for all, who were born between 1953 and 1958 and whose license was issued before 01.01.1999.

Should you be required to convert your license, please contact the authority in Germany that issued your license.
