Visa for an intensive language course
Here you will find information on the documents to be submitted for a language course in Germany
General Information

The following applies to persons requiring a visa:
- Certificates, diplomas, etc. must be submitted in the original with apostille/legalisation. You will receive the originals back after your application has been processed.
- Flight bookings are not required to apply for a visa - please book only after you have received your visa.
- The representation reserves the right to request further documents.
- Incomplete documents will delay the procedure and may lead to rejection
An intensive course is a course with at least 18 hours of German lessons per week. This does not include weekend or evening courses. The course must also not be an integration course for foreigners already living in Germany.
Required Documents
To apply, you will need the following original documents plus one set of copies to present at your appointment at the Embassy. We highly recommend to use the information sheet as a checklist and bring it as a print out for your appointment.
Please pay attention that all Tanzanian documents issued by an authority of the state needs to be legalised.

Information Sheet
In your application form (VIDEX) you enter all the information about your entry and your stay in Germany. You must complete this form and print it out once, sign and date it.
If you are a minor, your legal representatives must sign the application and declare their consent.
A recent biometric photo (3.5 x 4.5 cm with a light background)

Your passport must be signed and valid for at least one year from the date your visa is issued.
Please note that the document must still have at least two blank pages (if the decision is positive, your visa will be affixed here later).
Do you not have Tanzanian citizenship?
If you are not a Tanzanian citizen, please provide us with your Tanzanian residence permit.
Proof of your residence in Tanzania can be, for example, a copy of your electricity bill, water bill or gas bill.or a rent contract.
For non- Tanzanian nationals: Tanzanian residence permit
Written confirmation of enrolment for an intensive German course at a language school in Germany on the letterhead of the language school with details of the duration and intensity of the language course including proof of payment
Full details of the reference address in Germany (e.g. inviting party, contact person at the language school or student residence).
Personal, informal letter of motivation in German or with translation especially explaining your reason for taking the language course

Please provide us with your CV in English or German. Please use the Europass format.

Proof of enrolment in university degree of other professional training
Certificate of completion or notification of participation in this course (with German translation).
- Copy of correspondence with the university or preparatory college in Germany: for doctoral studies: correspondence with the doctoral supervisor
- For admission to a postgraduate programme: Proof of graduation from a university (with legalisation and German translation by a sworn translator)
This can be in the form of a contract of formation, enrolment, job offer etc.
If not confirmed by the university in the admission decision: Proof of language proficiency
If sufficient language skills have not yet been confirmed in the university's letter of admission:
Proof of language proficiency in the language of instruction required for the degree programme or preparatory course (without preparatory language course usually at least B2 in the language of instruction). A submitted language certificate must have been issued by an ALTE-certified institution.
Please note – in some cases you even migth need to provide proof of language proficiency in another language (like English IELTS)
- Opening of a blocked account in Germany currently totalling €10,332 net (preparatory language courses) or €11,364 net (language courses) from which only 1/12 of the deposited amount may be paid out each month. Further information can be obtained directly from the provider
- Formal letter of obligation (‚Verpflichtungserklärung‘) fom an inviting person in Germany (this can be signed at the immigration office responsible for the inviting person's place of residence)
- Scholarship confirmation (e.g. DAAD, Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, DFG, InWEnt, political foundations, public universities)
If a long or permanent stay is planned, some travel health insurance policies may exclude insurance cover in their terms and conditions. This restriction may also apply to an “incoming” insurance policy, so please ensure that your supplementary insurance policy provides adequate cover. Further information here
In certain cases, additional documents may be required.
Processing time:
Due to the regular need for approval from the authorities in Germany, you should generally allow six weeks for your visa application to be processed (calculated from the time you submit the complete application documents to the diplomatic mission abroad).
Please do not request a status update – these will not be answered but ignored.
