Applying for a Police Clearance Certificate

A certificate must be applied for in person at your local registry office (“Meldebehörde”).

If you do not reside in Germany, you may apply to the Federal Office of Justice for a police clearance certificate. The application requires a certified signature.

Certified Consular Certificate for Application

Your signature may be certified at a German Embassy (or by the Honorary Consul). In order to do so, you must book an online appointment and them come in person and bring:

  • Fully completed form

  • Your passport

  • Fee

Where Do I Send the Application?

Your certified application form must be sent by courier (post mostly goes missing) directly to the Federal Office of Justice:

Email or fax from a private person is not accepted!

Fee

In addition to the fee for a standard consular certificate at the German Mission, a fee for the issuing of the certificate will be asked by the Federal Office of Justice, currently the fee amounts to 13 EUR and has to be transferred directly to the Federal Office of Justice. We highly recommend to also forward proof of payment together with your application.

To which address will the police clearance certificate be send?

Your decide by stating adress/Embassy in your application. However, should you decide to have the police clearance certificate to the German Embassy in Dar Es Salaam, please note we will not have your contact details to inform you about ist arrival unless you have provided your contact details beforehand. Should the document not be picked up within six months, the document will be returned.
