According to current law a first name or surname may only be changed if an important reason within the meaning of the Law on Name Changes (NamÄndG) justifies this.
For German citizens, the use of a name is subject only to German law until 30th April 2025. As of 1st of May 2025 the name of a German abroad will be defined by the applicable lat at the place of residence.
